Welcome from the CEO

Our story began in 1996, when the organisation was established as a drop-in centre supporting adults experiencing complex mental ill-health. Since then, we have grown and evolved enormously. Today, Momentum works across the mental health continuum, supporting people from eight years of age through to older adulthood. We are a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation, which means our purpose – and the wellbeing of the communities we serve – sits at the heart of every decision we make.

Our belief is simple:

Mental Health and Wellbeing for everyone, every single day.

As a social anthropologist, I am particularly proud of the way Momentum understands mental health as something shaped not only by the individual, but by connection, belonging, family, community, opportunity and purpose. The work we do can make a very real difference in people’s lives.

But Momentum is ultimately about people.

It is about the courage of a client who walks through our door for the first time. It is about a young person beginning to imagine a different future. It is about someone finding connection through a group, developing confidence with a Wellbeing Coach, or discovering that they are capable of more than they thought.

And it is about you.

Whatever your role at Momentum, you are now part of that story. Your ideas, skills, kindness, courage and willingness to contribute all matter. We want Momentum to be a place where you can do meaningful work, continue to learn, challenge us to do things better, and know that your contribution is valued.

There will be plenty to learn as you find your way around, and nobody expects you to know everything on your first day. Ask questions. Get to know people. Be curious. Bring your ideas. And take the time to understand why we do what we do.

Most importantly, never lose sight of the people at the centre of our work.

It is our privilege to walk alongside people as they move towards full and confident mental health and wellbeing.

I am delighted that you have chosen to join us.

Welcome to Momentum. I hope you will be as proud to be part of it as I am.

Our Story

From Clubhouse to Momentum

Momentum Mental Health has been part of the Darling Downs community since 1996, when we began as Toowoomba Clubhouse β€” a drop-in centre supporting adults experiencing complex mental ill-health.

For much of our history, 112 Russell Street, Toowoomba has been our home. It is a place with a lot of history, and one that has seen Momentum grow and change alongside the community we serve.

What began as a small Clubhouse service has evolved into a contemporary mental health and wellbeing organisation supporting children, adults, families and carers across the mental health continuum.

Today, our work extends well beyond the walls of 112.

We provide individual wellbeing coaching, group-based programs, psychosocial supports, NDIS services, early intervention for children, young people and families, and pathways to clinical care. We also work across regional and rural communities, taking support closer to people wherever we can.

More than one organisation

One of the things that makes Momentum special is the breadth of support we can provide.

Depending on a person’s needs, they may connect with Momentum through:

  • 1:1 Wellbeing Coaching and our extensive range of group wellbeing programs;
  • the Group-Based Peer Recovery Support Program (GBPRSP), funded by the Queensland Government through Queensland Health;
  • the Commonwealth Psychosocial Support Program (CPSP), funded by the Australian Government through the Darling Downs and West Moreton PHN;
  • NDIS psychosocial supports for eligible clients living with disability;
  • Building Momentum for Youth and Their Families/Carers, our early-intervention program for children and young people aged 8–17, funded by the Queensland Government through Youth Justice; and
  • clinical psychology, provided in partnership with Mindware Psychology, giving clients access to bulk-billed psychological therapies onsite at Momentum.

Our partnership with Mindware Psychology helps bridge the gap between community-based wellbeing support and clinical mental health care. Alongside psychology services, clients can also access an onsite GP one day each week, helping us provide more connected and accessible support.

We’re part of our community

Momentum has always been about more than delivering services.

We believe strong communities are an important part of good mental health.

That’s why you’ll see Momentum out and about β€” at community events, schools, workplaces, expos, regional activities, professional forums and local celebrations. We create opportunities to talk about mental health, reduce stigma, build connection and help people know where they can turn when they need support.

Community engagement isn’t an extra part of our work.

It’s part of who we are.

Growing with our community

Our growth over the years reflects both the changing needs of our community and Momentum’s willingness to evolve.

We have grown considerably from our Clubhouse beginnings. Our services are broader, our reach is wider and the people who come to Momentum are more diverse than ever before.

But some things haven’t changed.

We remain a registered charity and not-for-profit organisation with people and community at the heart of what we do.

We still believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live well.

And we still believe it is an extraordinary privilege to walk alongside people as they build connection, confidence, purpose and hope.

Our story began in 1996 β€” and every person who joins Momentum becomes part of what happens next.

Momentum has grown because our community has grown with us – and our story is still being written.

Working at Momentum

We want Momentum to be a great place to do meaningful work.

We work hard, support each other, celebrate what goes well and recognise that looking after our own wellbeing helps us do our best work for our clients and community.

Here are some of the everyday things that will help you find your feet.

πŸ•˜ Your working hours

Your hours of work and usual working arrangements are outlined in your employment agreement.

If you’re unsure about your hours, roster, workload or day-to-day arrangements, talk to your Team Leader.

🌿 Our 9-Day Fortnight

For eligible employees, Momentum’s way of working includes a 9-day fortnight.

The idea is simple: 100% of the productivity, in 80% of the time, for 100% of the pay.

Your additional day away from work is your Wellbeing Gift Day β€” a paid day to spend on the things that support your personal or family wellbeing.

Eligibility and participation conditions apply, so talk to the Office Manager if you need more information.

πŸ’° Getting paid

Momentum employees are paid fortnightly.

Your payslips are available through the MYOB Team app.

Have a question about your pay, payroll details or MYOB?

Talk to the Office Manager.

🌴 Taking leave

We want people to take their leave and have time away from work.

Leave requests are submitted through the MYOB Team app and approved by your Team Leader.

If you have a question about your leave balance, MYOB or the leave process, talk to the Office Manager.

Need the step-by-step instructions?
β†’ How to apply for leave in MYOB

πŸ€’ If you’re unwell

Sometimes you simply can’t make it to work.

Follow Momentum’s current leave and notification process and let the appropriate person know as early as you reasonably can.

β†’ Sick leave & absence information

πŸ’¬ Staying in the loop

There is always plenty happening at Momentum.

Mumbles

Mumbles is our regular staff newsletter and one of the ways we share what’s happening across Momentum β€” important updates, upcoming activities, successes and other things worth knowing.

Tip: Read your Mumbles!

Teams & Outlook

Microsoft Teams, Outlook and your calendar are also important ways we communicate and organise our work.

Keep an eye on them so you know what’s happening across your team and Momentum.

🀝 Supervision & support

You aren’t expected to figure everything out on your own.

Your Team Leader is your first point of contact for day-to-day questions, coaching support, workload, priorities and guidance.

Supervision and reflective practice are also important parts of working at Momentum. Use them to ask questions, think through challenges, learn and develop your practice.

And if you make a mistake? Own it, learn from it and ask for help when you need it.

That’s part of our value of Accountable Actions.

πŸ’‘ Got an idea?

We want to hear it.

Momentum has grown by being prepared to try things, challenge old ways of working and look for better solutions.

Have an idea about:

We encourage you to use the 5 Ways to Wellbeing in your own life, take your breaks and leave, use your Wellbeing Gift Day for its intended purpose, participate in supervision and speak up when you need support.

🧠 Employee Assistance Program

Sometimes you may need support that sits outside your usual workplace supervision.

Momentum’s Employee Assistance Program is provided by Footsteps Community Services and offers confidential counselling and support to eligible employees and their immediate family members.

You don’t need to go through your Team Leader to seek EAP support.

The Digital Toolkit

You don’t need to learn every system on Day 1.

These are the main digital tools you’ll use at Momentum, what they’re for and where to go when you need some help.

πŸ’» Microsoft 365

Your everyday work tools

Your Momentum Microsoft 365 account gives you access to the tools you’ll use every day, including:

Outlook β€” email and calendar
Teams β€” communication, meetings and collaboration

Your Momentum email and calendar are important ways we communicate, so make a habit of checking them regularly.

You’ll use it to find things such as:

  • policies and procedures
  • forms and templates
  • organisational documents
  • program and service information
  • staff resources
  • shared files and working documents.

A good rule: before creating something new, check whether it already exists in SharePoint.

πŸ“ Zanda

Our client management system

Zanda is Momentum’s client management system.

Depending on your role, you’ll use Zanda to access and record information such as:

  • client details
  • case notes

  • emergency contacts
  • documents
  • group attendance
  • your client caseload.

Client information is confidential. Only access information you need for your role and always follow Momentum’s privacy, confidentiality and record-keeping requirements.

Digital Basics

A few simple habits help keep Momentum’s information safe.

πŸ” Keep it secure

Never share your passwords or login details.

Lock your computer when you walk away.

Be cautious with unexpected emails, links and attachments.

πŸ‘₯ Protect client information

Only access client information when you have a legitimate work reason to do so.

Don’t store client information in personal accounts, devices or unauthorised locations.

πŸ“‚ Put things where they belong

Use Momentum’s approved systems and file locations rather than creating your own filing system.

❓ If you’re unsure β€” ask

It is much easier to fix a question before information is saved or shared in the wrong place.

Finding Your Way Around

Welcome to 112

112 Russell Street has been Momentum’s Toowoomba home for many years, and you’ll quickly get to know its quirks, spaces and people.

You’ll find a mix of staff workspaces, group program areas, meeting spaces and shared facilities throughout the building.

Take some time during your first few days to explore β€” and don’t be afraid to ask where something is!

Your induction will include a tour of the building so you know where to find:

Reception & Kitchen
The main reception area and shared kitchen facilities.

Staff Lunch Area
A space to step away from your desk, have lunch and catch up with colleagues.

Group Program Area
One of the main spaces used for Momentum’s group activities and programs.

Staff Workspaces
Offices, Wellbeing Coach workspaces, hot desks and student placement areas.

Meeting & Private Spaces
Spaces are available when you need somewhere appropriate for a meeting or confidential conversation.

Staff & Client Toilets
Separate facilities are available within the building.

Printer & Resources
Shared printing, equipment and resources are located within the staff areas.

Emergency Exits & Safety Equipment
You’ll be shown these during your induction. Make sure you know where your nearest exit is before you need it.

Good to Know

πŸš— Where do I park?

Your induction tour should include where staff can park and any areas that need to remain available for clients, visitors or neighbouring businesses.

If you’re unsure where you can park, ask the Office Manager.

πŸ₯ͺ Where can I eat lunch?

You’re welcome to use the staff lunch area and kitchen facilities.

We encourage you to step away from your workspace when you can β€” lunch is also a great opportunity to get to know people outside your immediate team.

Please help keep shared spaces clean and ready for the next person.

🀫 Where can I have a private conversation?

Confidentiality matters.

If you need to have a sensitive conversation with a client, colleague or external person, use an appropriate private space rather than an open office or shared area.

If you’re unsure which room is available or appropriate, ask your Team Leader or Office Manager.

πŸ”‘ How do I access the building?

The Office Manager will arrange the keys, access or other information you need for your role.

Please look after Momentum keys and access information carefully and don’t share them with anyone who isn’t authorised.

If a key is lost or you have an access problem, let the Office Manager know promptly.

β˜• One last thing…

Shared spaces belong to all of us.

Put things back where you found them, clean up after yourself, let someone know when supplies are running low, and if you notice something that needs fixing β€” don’t assume someone else has already reported it.

A little consideration goes a long way towards making 112 a great place for our clients, visitors and each other.

πŸŒ™ What if I’m last out?

If you’re the last person leaving 112 Russell Street, you’re responsible for making sure our buildings are secure.

Don’t rely on memory β€” use the Lock-Up Checklist every time.

Before leaving, the lock-up process includes checking:

🏠 Main Building

  • A-frame signs have been brought inside
  • fish tank light is off
  • front doors are properly secured
  • CEO office is secure, with lights and air-conditioning off and windows closed
  • toilet lights are off and windows are closed and locked
  • windows throughout the building are closed
  • kettles and relevant appliances are off
  • Smart Board and TV are off
  • staff computers are shut down or locked
  • fan and heater are off
  • internal lights are off
  • designated outside lighting remains on as required

β˜• Kitchen

Check that:

  • windows are closed
  • dishwasher and coffee machine are off
  • fridge and cold room are properly closed
  • stove exhaust fan is off
  • fans and air-conditioning are off
  • internal lights are off
  • designated veranda lighting remains on
  • external doors are properly secured
  • the alarm is set

🏑 Cottage

Check that:

  • office and bathroom windows are closed
  • air-conditioning is off
  • internal lights are off
  • designated outdoor lights remain on
  • the alarm is set

πŸ›  Workshop

Check that:

  • lights are off
  • door is locked
  • roller door is locked

πŸš— Outside

Before you leave:

  • check Momentum vehicles are locked
  • check vehicle windows are secure.

πŸ” Final check

Make sure the main building and cottage alarms are set before leaving.

For security reasons, alarm codes, key numbers and detailed security instructions are kept in the current Lock-Up Procedure rather than in this Welcome Guide.

If you’re unfamiliar with the lock-up process, ask the Office Manager to take you through it before you are responsible for closing the building on your own.

Staying Safe at Momentum

Everyone has a role in making Momentum a safe, respectful and welcoming place for our clients, visitors and each other.

You don’t need to memorise every safety procedure. You do need to know how to recognise when something isn’t right, take reasonable action and speak up early.

πŸ›‘οΈ Safety is everyone’s responsibility

While you’re at work, we expect you to:

  • take reasonable care of your own health and safety
  • consider how your actions may affect other people
  • follow reasonable safety instructions and procedures
  • use equipment appropriately
  • report hazards, incidents, injuries and near misses
  • ask when you’re unsure
  • never walk past something you believe could put someone at risk.

See something? Say something.

Reporting a concern isn’t about blame. It gives us the opportunity to respond, learn and make things safer.

⚠️ Hazards, incidents & near misses

A hazard is something that has the potential to cause harm.

An incident is something that has happened and caused, or could have caused, harm.

A near miss is something that almost resulted in harm.

If you notice any of these:

1. Make the situation safe if you can do so safely.

2. Tell your Team Leader or Office Manager.

3. Follow Momentum’s current reporting process.

4. If someone has been injured or requires assistance, get help immediately.

β†’ Report an incident or hazard

πŸ”₯ Know what to do in an emergency

During your induction, make sure you know:

  • where the emergency exits are
  • where fire extinguishers and other emergency equipment are located
  • where the first aid equipment and defibrillator are
  • who the First Aid Officers and Fire Wardens are
  • where to assemble following an evacuation
  • what to do if you discover a fire or other emergency.

If an evacuation is called, follow the directions of the Fire Warden and do not re-enter the building until you are told it is safe to do so.

β†’ Emergency & Evacuation Procedure

🩹 First aid

First aid equipment and a defibrillator are available at Momentum.

If you or someone else needs first aid:

  • seek assistance from a First Aid Officer
  • call emergency services where necessary
  • make sure the incident is reported afterwards.

Current First Aid Officers and emergency information should be displayed in the workplace.

🧠 Psychological safety matters too

Safety isn’t only physical.

We want Momentum to be a workplace where people can ask questions, raise concerns, admit mistakes, offer different perspectives and ask for support without fear of being dismissed or belittled.

Working in mental health can also involve difficult conversations and situations.

If something at work has affected you, don’t feel that you need to simply carry on.

Talk to your Team Leader, another appropriate manager or the Office Manager.

Confidential support is also available through our Employee Assistance Program provided by Footsteps Community Services.

🀝 Keeping our clients safe

Our clients have the right to feel safe, respected and welcome at Momentum.

That means maintaining:

Confidentiality
Protect personal and client information.

Professional boundaries
Keep relationships safe, appropriate and professional.

Duty of care
Act when you have reasonable concerns about someone’s safety or wellbeing.

Respect
Treat every person with dignity, regardless of their circumstances, background or experiences.

Safeguarding
Know that additional responsibilities may apply when working with children, young people and people with disability.

If you are ever uncertain about a client safety, safeguarding or practice issue:

Don’t manage it alone β€” talk to your Team Leader.

πŸ” Privacy & confidentiality

You’ll have access to information that people trust us to protect.

Only access client or organisational information when you need it for your work.

Don’t discuss confidential information where you can be overheard, and don’t store or share Momentum information using unauthorised personal accounts or systems.

If you think information has been accidentally lost, disclosed or sent to the wrong person:

Tell your Team Leader or Office Manager promptly.

Mistakes are much easier to manage when we know about them early.

β†’ Privacy & Confidentiality

πŸš— Staying safe on the road

Some roles involve travelling between locations, visiting clients or using Momentum vehicles.

Before using a Momentum vehicle:

  • make sure you’re authorised to drive it
  • follow the current vehicle booking and use procedures
  • complete any required checks
  • drive safely and according to road rules
  • report damage, incidents or concerns promptly.

🏠 Working safely away from 112

Momentum’s work happens in many places β€” not just our main office.

You may work in community venues, regional locations, partner organisations or other environments depending on your role.

Before working somewhere unfamiliar, consider:

Where am I going?

Who knows where I am?

What risks might be present?

How will I get help if I need it?

Follow the relevant Momentum procedures and talk to your Team Leader if you have any concerns.

If something doesn’t feel right…

Trust that instinct and speak up.

You don’t need to decide whether something is officially a β€œWHS issue”, β€œclient issue”, β€œHR issue” or β€œincident” before you tell someone.

Before you finish your induction…

Make sure you can answer these five questions:

2. Where do we assemble during an evacuation?

3. How do I report an incident or hazard?

4. Who do I speak to if I’m concerned about a client?

5. Where can I get support if something at work affects my wellbeing?

If you can’t answer one of them yet, ask before your induction is complete.
