Art Therapy paving the way to wellness.

June 20, 2022

Toowoomba based mental health and wellbeing organisation Momentum Mental Health is determined to flip the way that we tackle ill mental health in our community.

Momentum Mental Health CEO Debbie Bailey has been an avid supporter of wellbeing activities to place more focus in the ill mental health prevention space for our community.

“Our approach with members at Momentum is non-clinical. We are committed to working with the human, and focussing on the illness. Ideally we can help people do this before people need acute care.” she said.

Part of this commitment sees a variety of interesting wellbeing focussed programs running each month at Momentum, these include, Tai Chi, Yoga, Cooking sessions and the very popular Art Therapy.

Art therapy is an evidence based treatment approach that integrates psychotherapeutic techniques with the creative process to improve wellbeing. Upwards of 120 people have been attending and creating works in the Art Therapy sessions at Momentum for the last year, and so an exhibition was just a natural progression, and, with friends in artistic places, this possibility has become reality.

“Partnering with other like-minded services such as The Lighthouse Cultural Precinct is an ideal step in the right direction.” said Mrs. Bailey.

“Emma Mactaggart and her team are committed to creating social change in our community through art, literacy and education, and we are privileged to be showing our pieces in their beautiful gallery space later this month.”

Pieces created by Art Therapy participants will be on display at The Write Gallery in the Lighthouse Cultural Precinct from Wednesday 15 June to Wednesday 22 June. Selected pieces will be for sale, and admission to the exhibition is free. All are welcome.

Momentum will also be hosting Art Therapy, Creative Writing and an Open Studio Art Session for interested participants to attend.
